The History and Disposition of White Golden Retrievers
A Brief History
White Golden Retrievers, also known as English Cream Golden Retrievers, trace their roots back to Scotland in the mid-19th century. The breed was originally developed by crossing the now-extinct Yellow Wavy-Coated Retriever with the Tweed Water Spaniel, and later with Bloodhounds, Irish Setters, and more Wavy-Coated Retrievers. The goal was to create a loyal, intelligent, and highly trainable hunting companion with a gentle mouth for retrieving game.
While Golden Retrievers became popular in both the UK and the United States, two slightly different lines developed over time. The lighter-colored, stockier dogs became the standard in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom, while the American line took on a slightly leaner build and deeper golden coat. Today, White Golden Retrievers—often called "English Creams"—are admired for their soft, pale coats, calm demeanor, and exceptional companionship.
